Co-Management Cataract Surgery

What is a Cataract?

A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens, which can cause blurry vision, glare sensitivity, difficulty reading, and trouble seeing at night. Cataracts develop gradually and are a natural part of aging, but they can also be caused by injury, certain medical conditions and medications, or prolonged exposure to UV light.

When is Cataract Surgery Needed?

Cataract surgery is typically recommended when cataracts begin to interfere with your daily activities, such as reading, driving, or recognizing faces. If you experience:

  • Blurry or hazy vision

  • Increased glare and halos around lights, especially at night

  • Difficulty seeing in low-light conditions and needing more light then previously

  • Frequent prescription changes in glasses

…it may be time to discuss surgical options. Our team will evaluate your vision and determine when surgery is appropriate.

Intraocular Lens (IOL) Implant Options

During cataract surgery, the clouded lens is replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). We offer guidance on the different types of IOLs available, including:

  • Standard Monofocal IOLs – Provide clear vision at a single distance (near or far), often requiring glasses for certain tasks after surgery.

  • Toric IOLs – Correct astigmatism for sharper vision in Monofocal IOLs or Multifocal IOLs.

  • Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) IOLs – Enhance vision across a wider range without the abrupt focal jumps and offers multiple focal points, reducing and potentially eliminating the dependence on reading glasses altogether.

  • Light Adjustable Lenses (LAL) – The latest innovation in IOL technology, LAL allows for vision adjustments after surgery using UV light treatments. This customization ensures the sharpest possible vision tailored to each patient’s needs.
